Aid-2-India International made its first contribution to a large-scale relief effort in response to the devastating Earthquake that struck the region of Gujarat, India’s most western state. Aid 2 India International was active in bringing needed supplies such as food, water, clothing and medical supplies from southern Bangalore to the worst struck areas and people in Gujarat.

The Earthquake struck on the morning of January 26 2001, and with a magnitude of 7.6 it was among the top two most destructive earthquakes ever to occur in India. According to the Indian government’s statistics, over 19,000 people lost their lives and over 600,000 people were left homeless. Damage to infrastructure was equally devastating, measuring in billions of dollars.

People had lost their families, their homes, and their possessions. Many children were without parents and the people were in a state of shock gripped by fear. It was at this time when the staff and volunteers at Aid 2 India International discovered their new commitment of helping not only victims in Gujarat but a vision of expanding humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable segments of Indian society.
